Philosophy We believe that everyone has a basic human right to live without violence. We will provide services to all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault without prejudice with regard to age, gender, ethnicity, religion, national origin, color, sexual orientation, marital status, political belief, mental or physical disability, or socioeconomic status. We believe that domestic violence exists when any person in a close personal or familial relationship intentionally controls another through the use of force, threat of force, or behavior destructive to the sense of self. We believe that abuse in all of its forms—physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic—is wrong. Operating out of a model of empowerment, we believe that every individual has the ability and right to make decisions governing his or her own life. Because domestic violence and sexual assault can deprive an individual of their sense of autonomy, we will provide services in a way that respects the individual and their freedom of self-determination. As an organization, we will adhere to healthy boundaries in our work with clients, with other agencies and among staff. We will communicate with clients, agencies and each other with honesty, compassion and respect. We believe that domestic violence and sexual assault moves beyond the realm of individual relationships and reflects the values of our society regarding violence and the role of women and the family. In our work with individuals and the community we will strive to effect change that eliminates violence and empowers all people to live to their fullest potential.
